Apple sauce
It has been a while! I apologize for taking such a long break, work is much more time consuming for me during the summer! Yet, now that fall is here and winter just around the corner, I shall have a bit more free time for sharing my favorite recipes with you here!
Today, as the rain drips down outside my windows, I decided to ease back into it with a simple, yet highly delicious recipe: Apple sauce!
This one is low sugar and quick to put together!
This is a very flavourful, and just slightly sweet recipe. Most of the sweetness coming from the apples themselves, rather than added sweeteners.I whipped this up the other morning while I was making pancakes, this makes a delicious, low-sugar topper for pancakes in the fall!
I used Macoun apples in this recipe because my mother-in-law was so kind and brought us a huge bag of organic, local Macouns! But I could also use maybe a gala or something, if you use a sweeter apple you can either omit the sweetener completely, or at least lessen it!
I used a pumpkin pie spice mix to season this, this spice is comprised of ginger, cloves, nutmeg and cinnamon.
This recipe serves 2, it was about 1 overflowing cup. Perfect for topping our pumpkin pancakes!

Apple Sauce
6-8 apples (I used Macoun)
1-2 tsp maple syrup or raw sugar
1/4 tsp pumpkin pie spice
approx. 1/4 cup water
1. Peel your apples, you don't have to but I wanted a nice smooth apple sauce without the chewy texture of the peels!
2. Chop into small, bite sized pieces
3. Place your apples, along with the sweetener, spices and water into a pot. Cover and turn the heat on medium. You want them to simmer for about 15-20 minutes. Stirring every few minutes.
4. When all the apples are soft, take a potato masher to it and smoosh the large bits of apples a bit. It should look something like this!
